the sound of bells woke her from her sleep. she rubbed her crusted eyes and moaned to an empty room. the sunlight drifted through the moth eaten curtains that drifted lazily as each new breeze ran its way into the small and almost barren room. except for the bed, a plain dresser and a desk holding two photos and a laptop the room was completely undecorated. a tight door led to an even tighter bathroom that not two people could fit in at once. the bathroom mirror was surprisingly bright and vibrant compared with the rest of the small living area. the edges have been covered with various sticky notes; numerous colors, torn and new, written on and clean, stacked over another and another the sticky notes are a collection years in the making. she stretches her arms out and cracks the sleep from her neck. bare feet stepping onto the not so cold wooden floor she slowly makes her way to the desk and turns the laptop on. the old computer model with a dented side and scratched screen bleeps angrily, complaining about being woken up so early on a saturday. absentmindedly she gives the right side of the screen a whack and it ceases its whine and begins humming properly. her eyes wander to one of the two pictures. one is placed on either side of the computer's screen, the one on the right in a black frame and the one on the left and silver and orange metal frame. her fingers reach out and caress the male face that smiles back at her from the left frame. his smile works it way into her and without realizing it she starts to mimic his truly genuine grin. the computer beeps quickly and she jumps out of her daze. entering her password her eyes drift to the other frame and she shakes her head. "I'm only human," she says, trying to make a point to one of the two faces that look up at her. The screen finishes loading and she starts up her program, forgetting about the two photos and their echoing words.
